I will discuss just a few that especially helped me to better understand the affliction of alcoholism and addiction. There are many solid reasons to read, and recommend, this book. It runs to some 450 pages and is broken down into seven parts. The book is a massive and ambitious undertaking. At the time of writing the book, he was the staff physician for the Portland Hotel Society, which provides housing and medical care to addicts in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside. “This is the domain of addiction,” he writes, “where we constantly seek something outside ourselves to curb an insatiable yearning for relief or fulfilment. Gabor Maté derives the title of his book In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction from the Buddhist mandala, the Wheel of Life, which revolves through six realms, one of which is that of hungry ghosts. Nothing sways them from their habit, not illness, not the sacrifice of all earthly goods, not the crushing of their dignity, not the fear of dying, the drive is that relentless. They are law enforcement officers - him LAPD her FBI- that are forced to work together to solve a murder and a bank robbery that are connected. In the Black Echo Bosch and Eleanor meet and start a relationship. His attention to detail and history helps make the story come alive on the page (or on the screen as the case may be). Michael Conley weaves the history of the city into all aspects of the storyline. So far in the Bosch series, LA/Hollywood is a separate character that is integral to the story. His anxiety about going back underground in two tunnels plays a minor role in the storyline. In The Black Echo, Bosch's demons are closer to the surface. Even though I had watched the series several times, I still didn't know 'whodunit', because as I said, the books were the blueprint but the series was not a faithful adaptation in terms of the crime or characters. Pounds, Chief Irving, and of course Eleanor Wish but they're all different - in some cases very different. Although the book is not set in our present day, it holds up, the storyline is fresh and engaging. The books take place starting in the 1990s, closer to the Vietnam war when the scars and trauma were still visibly present and close to the surface. Now to be a bit more detailed about the story We have to question authority, we need to take bigger steps to guarantee happiness and we need to speak out on injustice. This is not only a dystopian novel but a guide for the rebels in all of your hearts, forcefully hidden there by our society. I don’t know if the author is aware of the story he has created. Each and every character is so different from another and yet they all strived for the same goal - freedom.įreedom not only from captivity in a cell but from captivity in their society - our society -Īll the burdens they put on them and all the things they’ve been through are inspiring and even motivating. Their bravery, selflessness, hopefulness, as well as their good hearts were addictive. I fell in love with the characters in this story. It is because of the ending of this journey.Įveryone who knows me personally knows I recommend this series EVERY TIME someone asks (or doesn’t ask) for suggestions. One might think because of the ending of this book but no. I’m sitting here and writing this review with tears in my eyes. (Now rereading this at almost 6 AM I want to apologize for nothing making sense in this review :,) ) She felt that the pictures belonged to her, and reflected ruefully that they were about the only thing that did. She could look, as one can at last when one knows a great thing very well, confronting it with a dignity which it has itself conferred. She wandered a little, watching with compassion the poor visitors armed with guide books who were peering anxiously at the masterpieces. Passing between them now, as through a well-loved grove, she felt a calm descending on her. She climbed the stairs and wandered away into the eternal spring-time of the air-conditioned rooms.ĭora had been in the National Gallery a thousand times and the pictures were almost as familiar to her as her own face. She wondered if she should try telephoning Sally again but she no longer wanted to see Sally. It was as good a place as any other to decide what to do. Dora hadn’t especially intended to visit the National Gallery, but once she was there she went in. Casanova was a Venetian who explored to the full all the possibilities 18th century Venice offered by way of love and profit before being imprisoned, escaping from gaol, and fleeing from the city to begin travels which took him across Europe. Above all he was an autobiographer of enduring brilliance and subtlety who left behind him what is probably the most remarkable confession ever written. He financed business projects, organised lotteries, wrote opera libretti and dabbled in high politics. In his time he was diplomat, business man, trainee priest, traveller, prisoner, magician, confidence trickster, gambler, professional entertainer and chalatan. But Casanova was not just an energetic lover. The name of Giacomo Casanova, Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798), in now synonymous with amorous exploits, and there are plenty of these, vividly narrated, in him memoirs. Casanova's memoirs are a fascinating and perhaps unreliable account of his adventures with 122 women - according to his own counts - but they also provide an intimate portrait of the manners and life in the 18th century. Soldier, spy, diplomat, writer, adventurer, chiefly remembered from his autobiography, which has established his reputation as the most famous erotic hero. Just because there is no formula doesn’t mean things are hopeless. Ben, however, provides insight into what to do after you screw up. Most management books focus on how to avoid screwing up - or at least covering your ass if you do. The hard thing is waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat when the dream turns into a nightmare. The hard thing is getting people to communicate within the organization that you just designed. The hard thing isn’t setting up an organizational chart. The hard thing is when those “great people” develop a sense of entitlement and start demanding unreasonable things. The hard thing isn’t hiring great people. The hard thing is laying people off when you miss the big goal. The hard thing isn’t setting a big, hairy, audacious goal. The book is one of the best business books I’ve read in a long time. “There’s no recipe for leading a group of people out of trouble,” writes Ben Horowitz in The Hard Thing About Hard Things. There is no formula for dealing with complexity that’s always changing. You’re reading something with no practical value and you’re not really learning anything. The problem with most business books is they present a formula for problems that ultimately have no formula.
